[applause] >> thank you very much for that kind introduction, dean. you may have noticed in the short biography that i am not a graduate of the air force academy. i would ask you to take it easy on those cadets because in a year or two, they will be defending you. thank you for the opportunity to be with you here this afternoon. it is really an honor to be a part of this distinguished lecture series. i want to be worthy of that honor. i want to do and say something here this afternoon that adds to our national discussion and our debates about the world in which we find ourselves. given the 11th anniversary of 9/11, i have asked if i could talk about law, policy, and teh war -- the war against al qaeda. we do bottom line up front. what i would hope to show to you in the next 35 minutes is to show all the sharp political rhetoric and we have risen at a consensus as to how we want to defend ourselves against this particular enemy. that
